Services

Credits and incentives, done properly.

Five services, each led by a partner, each documented to the standard an examiner expects.

R&D Tax Credits

The federal research credit under IRC §41 and complementary state incentives provide dollar-for-dollar tax savings for businesses investing in technical innovation. Led by former Big 4 practice leaders, we combine deep technical substantiation with proven defense strategies to identify, calculate and document defensible credits that withstand examination scrutiny.

  • Modern Manufacturers & Fabricators: Operations developing bespoke machinery, re-engineering tooling, optimizing production lines or testing sustainable materials.
  • Engineering & Life Sciences Teams: Businesses solving technical uncertainties in civil, mechanical, chemical, biotech and consumer packaging applications.
  • Eligible Qualified Small Businesses: Early-stage companies with under $5 million in current gross receipts and less than five years of gross receipts, seeking to offset up to $500,000 annually against employer payroll taxes.

What you get

  • Comprehensive Credit Quantification: Turnkey calculation of federal and multi-state credits using the optimal methodology (Regular Credit vs. Alternative Simplified Credit).
  • IRS Audit-Ready Documentation: Granular, project-level technical reports that satisfy the Four-Part Test and establish a direct nexus between qualifying activities and costs.
  • Open Tax Year Lookback Reviews: Diagnostic reviews across all open prior years to capture missed research expenditures and file defensible amended refund claims.
  • Payroll Tax Offset Implementation: Form 8974 preparation and payroll coordination to monetize credits quarterly against FICA tax liabilities.

Section 174 Planning & Capitalization Studies

With Section 174 rules evolving significantly in recent years, determining which research costs must be capitalized versus expensed requires rigorous technical precision. We guide clients through complex domestic and foreign amortization rules, resolve related-party intercompany treatment and integrate Section 174 calculations seamlessly with your R&D tax credit strategy.

Cost Segregation

A cost segregation study reclassifies qualifying building assets from 39-year commercial or 27.5-year residential property into shorter 5-, 7- and 15-year recovery periods, significantly accelerating depreciation deductions and increasing near-term cash flow. Led by experienced specialty tax professionals, we deliver detailed engineering-based studies structured to withstand IRS examination while maximizing immediate liquidity.

  • Lookback Studies & Form 3115 Implementation: Turnkey preparation of Form 3115 (Application for Change in Accounting Method) under IRC §481(a) to take a cumulative catch-up deduction in the current tax year.

Energy Incentives

§179D and §45L are often lumped together, but their sunsets work very differently. The §179D sunset is widely misunderstood: any commercial building whose construction began on or before June 30, 2026 remains eligible when it is placed in service. Because construction takes years, many projects completing in 2026, 2027 and beyond can still claim the deduction.

§45L ended for homes acquired after June 30, 2026, and remaining §45L opportunities are limited to homes that were certified during construction.

Who it's for

  • Commercial Building Owners & Developers (§179D): Buildings under construction now, placed in service this year or completed in prior open years, where construction began on or before June 30, 2026.
  • Designers of Public & Tax-Exempt Buildings (§179D): Architects and engineers on government or nonprofit projects whose construction began on or before June 30, 2026, including projects still underway.
  • Taxpayers With Open Tax Years (§179D): Building owners and designers that may have missed a §179D deduction on a project already placed in service.
  • Homebuilders & Residential Developers (§45L): Homes sold or leased on or before June 30, 2026 that were ENERGY STAR or Zero Energy Ready Home certified during construction.
  • Clients Planning Future Projects: Owners and developers who want to be ready if Congress restores or replaces these incentives.

What you get

  • Eligibility Review: A clear answer on whether a building in progress or already completed qualifies, including documentation of when construction began.
  • §179D Energy Modeling & Certification: Energy modeling, site inspection and certification by a qualified, licensed professional, plus allocation letters for designers of government and tax-exempt buildings.
  • §179D Lookback & Amended Filings: Capturing overlooked §179D deductions for qualifying buildings placed in service in open tax years.
  • §45L Credit Capture: Claims for qualifying homes already certified during construction. Because certification must happen during the build, §45L generally cannot be claimed retroactively.
  • Legislative Monitoring: We track proposals to restore or replace these incentives and will reach out when new opportunities arise.

Important notice: §179D and §45L follow different rules. §179D remains available for buildings whose construction began on or before June 30, 2026, when they are placed in service. §45L does not apply to homes acquired after June 30, 2026, and because it requires ENERGY STAR or Zero Energy Ready Home certification completed during construction, homes that were not certified at the time generally cannot qualify after the fact. We confirm eligibility before anything is claimed and will update this page if these incentives return.
